Designed to increase volunteer engagement at Toyota Financial Services, Making Life Easier was the theme of April 2012, which also was National Volunteer Month. National Boys & Girls Club Week will continue to be celebrated through a weeklong series of events designed to engage team members and to reinforce the program tenets of Boys & Girls Clubs (BGC).
VOLUNTEER KICK-OFF: Monday, April 2
Motivational speech by an expert in corporate philanthropy and volunteer engagement
BE ARTISTIC DAY: Monday, April 16
BGC Core Tenet: The Arts Volunteers: up to 25 Students: 100 (ages 5-10)
Activity: “Smash” Bookmaking
Catering: Pink’s Hot Dogs
Kids participated in an activity supported by volunteers and led by a local artist that includes making their own “smash” books (scrapbooks or memory books). The activity teaches kids to be creative, improve writing skills, express themselves, and envision their future.
BE BOOKSMART DAY: Tuesday, April 17

Activity: Book Giveaways / Storytellers
Catering: Box Lunches
Volunteers serve lunch and seat kids for a storytelling performance by We Tell Stories, a multi-ethnic traveling children’s theatre troupe. Afterwards, volunteers hand out books and read with kids in small groups.
BE MUSICAL DAY: Wednesday, April 18
BGC Core Tenet: Arts/Music Literacy/Career Development Volunteers: up to 25 Students: 100 (ages 5-10)
Activity: Make & Play Percussion Instruments
Catering: Sodexo Grill (burgers and hot dogs)
Volunteers help kids learn how to make and decorate their own percussion instruments – tambourines, gourd
shakers, and rainsticks. Professional musicians (Grammy Award-winning Ozomatli and friends) will assist and lead a collaborative jam session that includes kids and volunteers at the end.
SPLASH EVENT: Saturday, April 21
In celebration of the Clean Water Act’s 40th Anniversary and Earth Day, Santa Monica Baykeeper and the
Waterkeeper Alliance will host the 1st Annual Splash: Stand-Up for Clean Water paddleboard race & festival to
raise awareness about stormwater runoff and ocean pollution, and Santa Monica Baykeeper’s role in the
protection and restoration of waterways in Los Angeles County.
ENVIRONMENTAL FAIR: Tuesday, April 24
During lunchtime, team members toured the Wyland Foundation Mobile Learning Center and a farmers market on the company’s campus. In the afternoon, students from East Los Angeles will visit the campus to tour the mobile learning center.
L.A. RIVER DAY OF SERVICE: Saturday, April 28
This collaborative L.A. River Day of Service involves countless community groups and individuals volunteering
together at 20 riverside sites and other neighborhood projects along the 51-mile L.A. River. GRAMMY Award-winning Ozomatli performed live in celebration of the company’s volunteer success.
