“Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective” Exhibit

The exhibition Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective premieres at The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of Riverside Art Museum (aka The Cheech), starting June 18, 2022 and will run through January 22, 2023. Curated by Selene Preciado of the Getty Foundation and organized in partnership by The Cheech with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino, the exhibition will then embark on a national tour managed by CauseConnect.

The selection of an exhibition about Einar and Jamex de la Torre – often referred to collectively as “The de la Torre Bros.” – is relevant since the artist duo has a particular vision of the Latinx experience and American culture. It is explored in their work through a combination of humor and critical earnestness, borrowing elements from Mexican culture (pre-Columbian, historical, and popular) and other places in a sort of chameleonic-kaleidoscopic process that explodes into a myriad of layered images and meanings. Through their work, audiences will become familiar with concepts such as identity, mestizaje, Latinidad, hybridity, globalization, bi-culturalism, and more as well as interacting and engaging with the work through programming.
