CauseConnect organized Puro Muerto, a bold and visually striking exhibition that offered a contemporary take on the centuries-old tradition of Día de los Muertos. Presented in partnership with La Mano Press and hosted in the Getty Gallery at the Los Angeles Public Library’s Central Library, the exhibition invited viewers to explore the vibrant and evolving visual language of this sacred Mexican celebration.
With equal parts reverence and irreverence, Puro Muerto featured:
- 23 paintings
- 77 linocut and serigraph prints
- 20 drawings
- 8 mixed-media works
From skeletons in sombreros and luchador outfits to humorous, ironic, and symbolic portrayals of the afterlife, the artworks reflected a modern perspective on death—both mocking and embracing it. Through vivid imagery, the exhibition illuminated a cultural belief that death is not the end, but a transformation to be acknowledged, laughed at, and above all, celebrated.
Puro Muerto translated this Mexican ideology into a universal language of color, satire, and reflection—reminding us all of the beauty in life, and the inevitability of death.
