Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective Art Exhibition
Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective premiered at The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum, June 18, 2022 – January 22, 2023. Curated by Selene Preciado of the Getty Foundation, the exhibition is traveling to six other venues across the country under the management of Melissa Richardson Banks, CauseConnect. The exhibition was made possible through a collaboration between the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino and The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum. Additional support was provided by the National Museum of the American Latino for the national tour.
The selection of an exhibition about Einar and Jamex de la Torre – often referred to collectively as “The de la Torre Bros.” – is relevant since the artist duo has a particular vision of the Latinx experience and American culture. It is explored in their work through a combination of humor and critical earnestness, borrowing elements from Mexican culture (pre-Columbian, historical, and popular) and other places in a sort of chameleonic-kaleidoscopic process that explodes into a myriad of layered images and meanings. Through their work, audiences will become familiar with concepts such as identity, mestizaje, Latinidad, hybridity, globalization, bi-culturalism, and more as well as interacting and engaging with the work through programming.
